1920s The Siberian Connection
The story of Kalia begins in the late 1920s amid the stark beauty of the Judean Desert. This remarkable chapter of human determination was initiated by Moshe Novomeysky, a brilliant engineer from Siberia who saw potential where others saw only harsh terrain. After winning a British government concession to establish a mineral extraction facility in the region, Novomeysky's industrial venture laid the foundation for what would later become Kalia. In the early 1930s, he transformed this pristine area into a workers' neighborhood.
1930 - 40s Overcoming the Challenges
The first settlers in this working area Novomeysky's established, future to be known as Kalia, faced significant obstacles. The harsh desert climate, with its extreme temperatures and minimal rainfall, tested their res olve daily. Many lacked farming experience, and the poor sanitary conditions of the era posed serious health risks. Limited resources and demanding physical labor made every achievement a testament to their resiliency. Through determination and mutual support, they gradually established a functioning community.
1960 - 70s The Beginning of a New Era
While the original settlement faced evacuation during regional conflicts of the late 1940s, Kalia's story didn't end there. In 1968, the community was reestablishe d, carrying forward the pioneering spirit of its founders. Over several waves of settlement, the population grew steadily, driven by shared vision and values. Today, with about 500 members, this small but mighty community continues to thrive, with agricult ure at its heart and cooperation as its foundation.
"From shared celebrations to daily meals, our community bonds are as enduring as the ancient rocks that surround us. While agriculture forms our foundation, it's the spirit of cooperation and mutual supp ort that truly defines Kalia", Linda Stein, one of Kalia's founding members.
2000s The Birth of Revival
The discovery of the Qumran caves near Kalia in 1947, with their ancient scrolls preserved for two millennia, inspired a unique venture. The desert's remarkable preservative properties, which protected these historical treasures, led to the birth of Revival in 2014 - a skincare brand that brings the Judean Desert with its intriguing history, resilient plants and mineral - rich aquatic elements to people worldwide.
